Limited by aerobic capacity

Your strength is not the first thing that fails.
Your capacity is.

You can usually do the individual moves. You can hold the grips. You can pull when you need to. But as the session or route goes on, your quality drops: your grip fades, your movement gets less precise, and your attempts get worse quickly.

You may notice this most on crimps, slopers, pinches or big moves — but the bigger pattern is not one specific grip. Your overall climbing output drops too soon.

That makes this an endurance or session-capacity problem.

The first fix is not a heavier hangboard protocol or a more specific strength tool. First, build the ability to keep climbing well for longer. Once that improves, take the diagnostic again. Your next limiter will become much clearer.

Below you’ll find two ways to train this: one for boulder gyms, and one for routes, traverses or longer easy climbing.

Your protocol:

Pick the one that fits your situation best.

Boulder Gym Capacity Protocol

  • Choose boulders 2–4 grades below your max
  • Climb 1 easy/moderate boulder
  • Rest 45–90 seconds
  • Repeat for 10–20 minutes
  • Rest 5–10 minutes
  • Do 2–3 rounds
  • 1–2 sessions per week

Intensity: you should finish each round feeling worked, but not destroyed. If your technique falls apart or every climb becomes a fight, choose easier boulders or rest longer.

The goal is to build session capacity: more quality climbing before your output drops.

Easy Climbing Protocol (sport climbing)

  • Choose very easy terrain
  • Climb continuously or near-continuously for 10–20 minutes
  • Keep pump low to moderate
  • Rest 5–10 minutes
  • Repeat 1–3 times
  • 1–2 sessions per week

Start with 10 minutes. Build toward longer blocks only if you can keep movement quality high.

Aerobic Base Protocol

  • Choose running, cycling, rowing or similar
  • 20–45 minutes per session
  • 2–3 sessions per week
  • Keep the intensity easy to moderate
  • You should be able to speak in short sentences
  • Do not turn this into hard intervals

Starting intensity: keep it controlled. You should feel like you are working, but you should not be fighting to finish.

The goal is to build a bigger aerobic base, so you can recover better, handle more climbing volume, and keep your session quality higher for longer.
