Limited by max sloper strength
Your hand opens before the rest of your body gives out.
You can still move. You can still pull. But on slopers, the hold feels impossible to keep — not because you’re pumped, but because you can’t produce enough open-hand force in that position.
This is a max sloper strength problem. And climbing more won’t always fix it.
On the wall, every sloper is different: angle, texture, wrist position, body tension and direction of pull all change constantly. Building max sloper strength requires the opposite — a repeatable grip position, heavy loading, full rest between efforts. Short, specific, controlled.
Below you’ll find the protocol and tools we recommend for this limiter.

Max Holds Protocol
- 3–5 sets
- 5–8 second holds
- 3–5 minutes rest between sets
- 1–2 sessions per week
Starting load: choose a load you can hold for 5–8 seconds with high effort, but clean control. The handle or sloper should not slip, rotate out of position, or force your wrist to collapse.
Progression: increase the load by 2–5% in the next session only if your last 3 sessions were completed with stable grip position. Keep the same grip, angle and setup.
Stop immediately if: you feel sharp pain, sudden discomfort, wrist/elbow irritation, or pain that increases from set to set.
This same structure can also be used for max hangs on hangboard slopers, as long as the angle, grip and loading stay consistent.
