Description

WhiteOak Training Ice Axes are a pair of wooden axes for practising ice climbing, drytooling and mixed technique on a regular climbing wall. The shaft and handle are shaped like modern technical axes, and the tips are covered with 4 mm Vibram XS Grip rubber, the same rubber used on climbing shoes, for grip on holds without damaging them.

What this solves

Ice and drytool seasons are short and conditions are unpredictable. These axes let you train the movement, body positions and grip endurance all year round, indoors.

Why this tool

Real axes damage holds and are not allowed in climbing gyms. With rubber tips, these wooden axes give you a realistic tool feel on normal holds.

Best for

Ice and mixed climbers preparing for the season, and climbers who want a fun, forearm-heavy variation on wall training.

Not ideal for

Real ice or rock. These axes are for training on climbing walls only.

Key features

  • Pair of axes made from solid 24 mm beech plywood
  • 4 mm Vibram XS Grip rubber tips that protect holds
  • Handle shape based on modern technical axes
  • Works on standard climbing wall holds

What's in the box

  • 2 training ice axes (1 pair)

Safety

Attach the axes to a leash so they cannot fall on people below, and wear a helmet. Check your gym's rules before use. Like climbing shoe rubber, the tip rubber wears with use; normal wear is not covered by warranty.

Max Climbing's Verdict

Great preparation for the ice and drytool season: you practise tool placements, lock-offs and body positions on a normal climbing wall. They are also simply a fun training tool, comparable to a pegboard or climbing sticks: integrated strength training where you climb and play instead of following a structured protocol. Forearms, lock-offs, shoulders and core all get worked at the same time.

👉 Best for ice and mixed climbers preparing for the season, and climbers who want a playful, unstructured way to build pulling strength.
